Right after something frightening

Illustration for Right after something frightening

Right after a frightening event, the body may shake, go numb, cry, or feel strangely calm. You may forget simple things or replay the moment again and again. These reactions are common. They do not mean you are weak, and they do not mean the danger is still happening.

The first hours

Get to a place that is as safe as you can make it. Drink water. Sit or lie down. If you are bleeding or injured, seek medical care first. Let one trusted person know where you are. You do not owe anyone a full account of what happened.

What can wait

You do not have to decide every next step tonight. If images, panic, or sleeplessness are strong, a conversation can keep the night from getting sharper.

Call CIPUH at 2919-9000 when you are ready to talk, even if you only want someone to stay on the line while you breathe. The line is free, confidential, and open all night.
