About Us

Psychological support rooted in Haiti’s realities.

Created by the Haitian Psychological Association (AHPsy), CIPUH brings together immediate listening, professional support, referral pathways, training, and community education to strengthen how psychological distress is addressed in Haiti

Why CIPUH

Mental-health support cannot wait for the crisis to pass.

In Haiti, emotional distress often exists alongside very real pressures: violence and insecurity, displacement, kidnapping, grief, natural disasters, economic hardship, family separation, and limited access to mental-health services.

CIPUH exists because people need somewhere to turn while those realities are happening, not only afterward.

Our role is not to minimize what someone is experiencing or tell them that their fears are simply in their head. It is to create a space where they can be heard, receive immediate psychological support, and identify an appropriate next step

How it started

A response to an urgent need

In March 2020, Haitian mental-health professionals mobilized as the psychological impact of kidnappings, insecurity, and the COVID-19 pandemic placed additional pressure on individuals and families across Haiti.

That response led to the creation of CIPUH through the Haitian Psychological Association (AHPsy). With support from Digicel, the 2919-9000 psychological assistance line launched on April 13, 2020.

What began as an emergency response became evidence of a broader need: accessible psychological support cannot exist only during a single emergency. Haiti needs stronger, sustainable pathways for listening, crisis response, referral, training, and mental-health education

Our Mission

Make psychological support easier to reach.

CIPUH works to ensure that people experiencing emotional distress can reach trained support, be heard without judgment, receive immediate psychological assistance, and, when needed, be connected to additional professional care.

We also work beyond the immediate moment of crisis by strengthening the people, practices, referral pathways, knowledge, and infrastructure that make responsible mental-health response possible.

CIPUH is not defined by a list of individual staff members. It is a coordinated model of people, professional expertise, supervision, and referral pathways working together to make psychological support accessible.

When someone reaches out, the first point of contact is a trained First Listener. First Listeners are prepared in active listening, crisis intervention, ethics, and psychological first aid. Their role is to listen, help stabilize the immediate moment, and understand what kind of support may be appropriate.

When a situation requires specialized intervention, it can be escalated to an on-call mental-health professional, including psychologists, social workers, or other qualified professionals. When longer-term support is appropriate, callers may be connected to additional services through CIPUH’s referral pathways.

Supervision and quality assurance help support the people providing care as well as the people receiving it.

How we show up

Human before clinical.

People should not have to prove that their pain is serious enough to be heard. CIPUH’s approach begins with dignity, listening, and respect for the realities surrounding each person’s experience.

Our work

More than a hotline

2919-9000 is an important doorway into CIPUH, but the vision extends beyond the call itself.

CIPUH’s next phase is about strengthening the ecosystem behind psychological support: preparing more First Listeners and supervisors, improving referral pathways, investing in quality assurance, building stronger data and evaluation practices, expanding community education, supporting research and learning, and developing the partnerships needed for long-term sustainability.

The goal is not simply to answer more calls. It is to contribute to a stronger, more accessible, and more resilient mental-health response system for Haiti.
